If you have questions or need help with your school’s PTA/PTSA, please reach out to: To keep communication strong and make sure parents, students, and schools feel supported, the Assistant Superintendent of Family and Community Engagement (F.A.C.E.), the Detroit PTA/PTSA Council Presidents, and State PTA leaders will meet every month to talk about how PTAs are doing, celebrate successes, and address any challenges. V.1.0 9/16/2025 If your school does not yet have a PTA/PTSA, here’s how elections will work: • A Parent Engagement meeting will be set up with the principal or his/her designee and Detroit Council Presidents to hold the election. • Two weeks prior to the meeting the Detroit Council Presidents will share information about PTA/PTSA membership and roles with the school community. ◦ Nominations for PTA/PTSA officers will be collected. ◦ Elections will be held by ballot during the meeting. Formalizing your PTA/PTSA: If your school already has a parent group with officers who have not been confirmed with Detroit PTA/PTSA Council, contact the Detroit Council Presidents to begin the process. Schools Without a PTA/PTSA If your school already has a PTA/PTSA, elections will follow the unit’s bylaws: • January (or month set by bylaws): ◦ The school’s PTA/PTSA nominating committee will collect nominations as outlined in the unit’s bylaws. ◦ Detroit Council President or School PTA/PTSA President will provide the unit’s bylaws to the members. • March/April (or election month in bylaws): ◦ PTA/PTSA holds its election meeting (annually, biennially, or triennially). ◦ School community and members will be notified of the upcoming election at least 30 days prior to the election meeting. ◦ Nominees and voters must be paid PTA/PTSA members by the deadline outlined in the unit’s bylaws. Special note: If unforeseen issues arise (such as power outages, building problems, weather, quorum not met, or other extenuating circumstances), elections may take place after April.
