For Angel Garcia, leading Western International High School isn’t really a job— it’s a homecoming that never ends. He graduated from Western in 2000 and eventually returned to the school that shaped who he is, carrying roots there that run across generations. His father taught at Western, his aunt once served as its principal, and today more than 20 fellow alumni work alongside him in the same halls he walked as a teenager. That continuity gives the school a sense of pride that feels earned and inherited rather than handed out. Western is also one of Detroit’s largest and most diverse high schools, serving more than 1,900 students. Students have access to Advanced Placement courses, dual enrollment, STEM and robotics programs, Career and Technical Education pathways, performing arts, and vocational training, all designed to prepare them for college, careers, and whatever they choose to pursue afterward. Even so, Garcia is quick to point past the course catalog to something he considers more important. “We’re the home of Southwest Detroit,” he says, treating that as a responsibility rather than a slogan. That sense of duty shapes the way he leads, because Garcia believes every student, without exception, deserves the support, opportunities, and encouragement they need to reach their full potential. So when Western was selected as one of the first schools to pilot the district’s High School Redesign initiative, which expands diploma pathways, opens earlier access to Advanced Placement courses, and broadens college and career readiness experiences, he saw a chance to help students connect their education to their own goals. “We’ve always done the best we could with the resources and support we had,” he says. “Once we understood what the redesign could mean for our students, I was excited.” Whether a student is earning college credit, exploring a trade, or finding a place in the arts, Principal Garcia’s vision stays the same. He wants every student to be known, supported, and prepared for what comes next, and at Western, that work continues every day under a principal whose roots are in the community and whose focus remains on its future.
